term, "motivation" refers to a multi-factorial concept that can be defined as "the complex forces, needs, drives, tension states, or other mechanisms," which collectively "create and maintain voluntary activity directed toward the achievement o personal goals" (Skemp-Arit and Toupence, 2007, p. 28). A variety of psychologists, such as Abraham Maslow, Fredrick Herzberg and Victor Vroom, have formulated theories that are designed to illuminate the psychological and environmental factors that influence motivation. Maslows hierarchy of needs model of motivation proposes that basic needs, such as the need for food, shelter, and security must be met before higher level needs, such as the need for self-actualization, can be successfully addressed (Skemp-Arit and Toupence, 2007). In other words, before a child is ready to learn, basic needs must be met. Fortunately there are social programs that help with this issue, as school breakfast and lunch programs can aid low-income parents in meeting their childrens needs. This necessarily implies that teachers should be watchful for children who need these programs and ensure that their parents or guardians have information on these programs and take advantage of them. Furthermore, Maslows model also encompasses emotional and psychological needs. Many of the children in the contemporary public school system have unmet emotional needs due to problems in their home background. By creating and maintaining a nurturing and positive learning environment in their classes, teachers can convey to these children a sense of security and safety that also addresses a basic need in Maslows theory. Herzbergs theory proposes that motivation is positively associated with achievement and recognition, as well as the nature of the work itself, while factors such as company policy, low salary, working conditions in general, and unsatisfactory peer and supervisory relations are obstacles to motivation (Skemp-Arit and Toupence, 2007).
