Yet even with all of these modern icons of negativity, I remain acutely aware of another time; an era perhaps one hundred years ago or so when "Little House on the Prairie" was an unquestionable reality, American patriotism ran rampant through the fields of the midwest, and people pridefully believed in the innocent dreams laid down by Americas founding fathers. But when did we go from light to dark, from heaven to hell, and from innocent to corrupt and amoral ? According to Eliot Asinof, there not only exists an answer to this question, there exists a precise year; 1919, he writes, was the year in which four specific things occurred to initiate and conclude "Americas Loss of Innocence." Included in these were (1) The United States rejection of Wilsons efforts to participate in the League of Nations, (2) the first "Red Scare," that caused us to persecute believed-Communists both here and in the Soviet Union, (3) the institution of Prohibition which would create a black market and facilitate the rise of organized crime and (4) the "fixing" of the World Series by gamblers. -2- In order to better understand the validity of points made by Asinof, one must first realize that the year he discusses was the first of about twenty that would transpire between World Wars. The first World War had caused understandable devastation to the United States and its citizens were eager to "return to normalcy."
