And finally, are there major factors, other than knowledge, that determine behaviors? Answering these three questions may give insight into the continued spread of HIV infection among young
adults. Major attempts have been made to provide accurate AIDS education in communities around the world. The U.S. leads the pack in educating students from as early as age
12. Prevention programs promoted by the U.S. government focus on education that provides for risk evaluation, but also discusses abstinence as a primary prevention technique. Educators commonly
provide information regarding condom use especially when presenting to groups who may have multiple partners (Aplasca, 1995). In a nation where by June 1995, over 2,184 adolescents under the
age of 19 had been diagnosed with AIDS, and more than one-fifth of all Americans infected with HIV were between the ages of 20 and 29 (NIDA, 1995), it is
obvious that the presence of necessary information does not directly relate to people participating in "safe" behaviors. Men, single people and young adults, ages 19-20 are most likely to participate
in unprotected sex with multiple partners (Binson, 1993). It is obvious that even people exposed to the vast array of AIDS educational material still participate in behaviors that put
them at risk. In one study of urban young adults ages 18-24, an average of 30% participated in risky behaviors at some time in the last 12 months and
only 20% of this population used condoms with any regularity. Well over 65% of the studied population had participated in at least one form of risky behavior, including unprotected
