for quite some time. Women began as nurses, helping soldiers abroad. This was considered to be a good thing by the people, but when World War II rolled around and
women began to become more involved in the military, they were considered to be somewhat of a disgrace. They were not looked upon kindly by the women who stayed home
waiting for their men. Canada was still an old fashioned society where women were to be proper. But after feminism came to the forefront with the advent of the sixties,
everything changed. Women were viewed quite differently from how they were in the past. They wanted equality and eventually, they would get it. As the 2000s unfold, controversy persists. With
the death of one female officer, people wonder whether or not women should be fighting along with the men. Canada is only one of a handful of countries that now
allows it. In delving into Canadian history, it seems that women have always been actively involved in military campaigns but their roles would change during the course of decades.
II. Early History It would be during the Second World War that women would come into their own in this aspect. Before 1939, the Canadian military
women would serve as nurses during the Northwest Rebellion in 1885 as well as in the South African War, the latter of which began in 1899 and lasted almost four
years (Dundas & Durflinger, 2006). Women would also serve in that capacity during the First World War which occurred between 1914 and 1918 (Dundas & Durflinger, 2006). By the
