matter, are not pre-ordained. If they were, nobody would fight them. Even after Guadalcanal, it looked as if the Japanese had kicked the Americans out of the Southwest
Pacific, and that Japan had won the war. However, future events would say otherwise. Overy sees the victory as something that needs an explanation and not something that can
be taken for granted. What occurred was complex and the author points out that few people look closely at the issue. In fact, American children are taught in such away
as to make the war look like a given. America always wins. Of course, the reality is not that at all. It could have just as easily gone the other
way. The reasons why the Allies won demands contemplation. What happened was that after fighting for a time in Europe, the Allies won. Germany surrendered. It was the end of
the Holocaust and the beginning of a new life for the people of the region, and for the Jews who had been persecuted. But while the war could have been
over then, it was not. Two more battles would be fought which was in Japan and they were fought at Okinawa and Iwo Jima. The last straw would be the
bomb that was let loose at Hiroshima. It was a devastating blow. A lesser, but just as detrimental act, was when a bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. The Japanese would
surrender five days after that. Although the facts of World War II are well known, the reason why the United States won is somewhat debatable. It is true that
the Japanese made a lot of headway in Guadalcanal. They had more resources and what it comes down to is military power. Yet, the Allies would gain strength by importing
