could find was that of John Stoessingers comparison of war with sickness in his book "Why Nations Go to War." Prior to reading this insightful
text, I pretty much believed that war was an unchangeable "dark side" of human nature. Stoessinger, however, cleverly reminds us that throughout the ages, many other changeable things have
been similarly defined as unchangeable. Such examples as cannibalism, incest, and slavery are among his more graphic illustrations of things which were considered to be human nature and which
are now considered as taboo. Stoessinger asserts that one of the reasons that war still exists is that it has not consistently reached a point
in which war represents grave danger or catastrophe. He demonstrates that intellect alone is not enough to teach us the need of preventing war. Rather, society must be
faced with a situation, in which just like with an ill patient, the conditions are so severe that it must be determined whether we live in peace or die entirely
Only in such a circumstance can we hope for an end to war or face the end of our own existence.
