institution of sports has changed a great deal in the past decades. What used to be a sport that was played for the sheer love of the sport, and not
for the money, is no longer. Sports have become a media event that is simply intended to make money. Or is it? As Ed Siegel states, in his essay "Where
are the Heroes," sports can clearly still be seen as symbolic of the human struggle and thus still present us with a sense of the heroic, which is perhaps why
they are still so popular despite the diminishing honor traditionally seen in the institution. The following paper examines Siegels essay from different perspectives. Where are the Heroes When
Siegel indicates that sports and sporting events can serve to symbolize the human struggle he is clearly arguing for all that sports holds dear and noble. When we think of
sports we are often led to think of several individuals who must work as a team, as one unit, if they desire to succeed and win the game. They cannot
be truly selfish and they cannot be true individualists within the game if they wish to succeed. They must also play by the rules and essentially behave as gentlemen, despite
the apparent violence of the game. In these regards we see many things that mankind strives for. We, as Americans, are powerful individualists, worrying about our own lives, our own
goals, and rarely truly taking others into consideration when we dream of our future or our successes. But, that is generally considered a selfish quality, even if it is a
common and realistic quality in todays society. The team work needed by a sporting team allows us to see the beauty of not being an individualist, and anyone who works
