(1995) and when these gases react to temperature, the position of the Earth in its orbit, and the Earths rotation, we experience these changes as weather. The study of weather and how to predict it is known as meteorology and is defined as the study of the complex motions and interactions of the atmosphere, including the observation of phenomena such as temperature, density, winds, clouds, and precipitation (N.Y. Library Ref., 1995; p. PG). Satellites and computers help meteorologists make their predictions, but anyone can learn to predict local weather patterns based on such simple things as observation, listening and a barometer. This paper was sold by , Inc. Predicting the weather Thin, wispy cirrus clouds which are often called mares tails are usually a sign of fair weather (Stapleton, 1995). However, if they are lower and thicken into what has been descriptively called a mackerel sky then these are cirrocumulus clouds and they are a sign that wet weather is probably on the way (1995). A mackerel sky of cirrocumulus can often broaden and develop into cirrostratus clouds from which the next stage is that they broaden into an almost uniform layer of altostratus clouds (Stapleton). Nimbostratus clouds can develop at this point and these usually result in heavy rainfall. White, puffy cumulus clouds-the type that people like to watch for shapes in- normally mean fair weather (Stapleton, 1995). However, if they build up and rise high enough, their tops will be sheared off by the jet stream and they could be transformed into cumulonimbus. These clouds have a characteristic flat anvil tops on an upper cirrus layer and usually have a dark, boiling nimbostratus layer underneath which can bring violent thunderstorms (1995). The direction in which the horn of the anvil points will be the direction in ...
