as medical technologies have improved, alternative therapies such as herbal medicines, acupuncture and acupressure, chiropractic, massage, healing energy, homeopathy and nutrition has been used to improve resistance to disease and to help combat disease. Furthermore, more women than men have embraced complementary healing approaches. These are known as complementary and alternative medicine, or CAM. Part of the reason for the fact that complementary healing techniques are more "feminine" than "masculine" date back many millennia. Men were responsible for finding food and defending the home turf, whereas women were tasked with taking care of home and hearth. Healing is definitely a domestic art, so its perhaps unsurprising that women have long been involved with everything from herbal medicines to sound nutrition to ensure the health of their families. Even today, in which women are not necessarily "tenders of the hearth," we see in various studies that they are more likely to use CAM tools such as diet, yoga, meditation, guided imagery and so on in various situations. For example, Faouladbakhsh and Stommel pointed out in their research among U.S. cancer patients that CAM "practice use was more prevalent among female, middle-aged, Caucasion and well-educated subjects" (p. E7). Furthermore, the researchers pointed out, pain, depression and insomnia among this sample were "strong predictors" of CAM usage (E7). By the same token, Hill-Sakurai et al in 2008 did research on use of CAM on women with menopause, yet went one step further to determine why many women going through "the change" turned to CAM for relief.
