In team-like fashion the combination of script, characters, plot and theme give rise to a satisfying experience for the audience, one that not only evokes an emotional response, but also leaves room for continued introspection due to some aspect of the movie. This emotional catharsis is what draws viewers to the theaters, and has been drawing them since the first character burst onto the screen. Film is an emotional medium. And, like it or not, critics withstanding, movies are not really judged by how much they make us think about an issue, but rather how they made us feel. It doesnt matter what kind of movie it is. This is the bottom line. Many would argue that the theme of a movie is what pulls this emotional identification along, but evidence does not support this claim. I submit that in film, as in literature, it is not the structure so much as it is the development of a meaningful character and/or plot. If one writes to the theme, then something seems to suffer(Putnam 93). Consider Alfred Hitchcocks movie, Vertigo. This whole movie is centered around one man and his inability to let go of an old love. The story, in brief, is about obsessive fears, and the redemptive qualities of love. Scotty is a detective who is afraid of heights. Because of this he has left the police force to become a private detective. A friend of his from college convinces him to help watch his wife who has become suicidal. The old friend confesses that he fears that his wife has been possessed by the spirit of his wifes great grandmother. In all of this presentation it can be stated that the emotional identification is never a matter of character psychology. ...
