to maturity or from good to evil, depending upon ones viewpoint. When the story begins, Candide is enjoying a carefree gentlemans life on Baron Thunder-ten-tronckhs castle in Westphalia (Germany). Voltaire first describes him this way: "He had a solid judgment joined to the most unaffected simplicity; and hence, I presume, he had his name of Candide" (1). Not much is revealed about his personal background as to why he is living at the castle, but it is rumored that he is the illegitimate son of the Barons sister. Candide is a good lad and flourished under the tutelage of his teacher, a philosopher named Pangloss. Pangloss is the eternal optimist who truly believes that everything, no matter how terrible it is perceived, happens for the best. Candide, whose name is synonymous with naivet?, is an impressionable young man who eagerly latches onto Pangloss life philosophy and adopts it as his own. He describes Candides idealistic existence as, "It is demonstrable that things cannot be otherwise than as they are; for as all things have been created for some end, they must necessarily be created for the best end... and they, who assert that everything is right, do not express themselves correctly; they should say that everything is best" (Voltaire 1-2).
