The technological progression that has led up to virtual private networks initially incorporated Wide Area Networks (WAN) in order to conjoin all the facets of a group or companys system: data, video, voice, as well as other computer business systems already incorporating a local area network (LAN). The primary purpose of a WAN is to connect all applicable communication components in such a manner that the LAN cannot, particularly when it comes to regions governed by local, national or international entities. From there, intranet technology was employed for its ability to provide a password-protected environment accessible only by those affiliated with the company. Several examples of intranet-based applications include online employee handbooks, where only certain people are designed to read the information provided within; time sheets; and standard groupware procedure, which offers an "alternative to dedicated networks on a global scale" (Anonymous, 1997). A number of corporate departments gain significant advantage by having intranet-based applications available for their usage, not the least of which include sales information, facts about rival companies and human resources data. Issues of safety and security are not of concern, because the appropriate tools are available to effectively address the issue.
