The Business unit of Verizon provides services to companies and government customers who are involved in global business (Cella, 2009). It employs more than 235,000 people (Cella, 2009). Verizons overall business strategy is to continue upgrading and growing. Ante (2009) wrote that this companys business model is even holding up through the current recession. And, it is due to their fiber optic investment. A few years ago, when Verizon announced that it was going to invest more than $10 billion in upgrading their networks to fiber optic cables, Wall Street thought they were crazy but it is exactly that investment that has allowed Verizon to continue in its steady growth plan (Ante, 2009). The investment was made in their broadband project/division and the company was right on target. Consumers want the faster connections for the Internet services (Ante, 2009). The other major fiber optic investment is related to television and demand for both continues to increase while the slower DSL service continues to decrease (Ante, 2009). Verizons fiber optic (FiOS) television service competes with cable and that is a very difficult challenge for the company. Even so, by the end of 2008, the company had nearly 2 million FiOS television customers (Ante, 2009). At the end of 2008, Verizon also had nearly 2.5 million broadband Internet customers, a million of whom signed up during that year (Ante, 2009).
