ideals of the culture. From ancient China to the modern western world, art is often very representative of the culture and the times. With this in mind the following paper examines three forms: the Peacock Room, Love and Yearning, and contemporary Chinese porcelain. The Peacock Room "The magnificent Peacock Room, decorated by James McNeill Whistler in 1876-77 for wealthy London shipowner Frederick Leyland, quickly became one of the most controversial, celebrated, and scandalous rooms in the world. Now on permanent display at the Freer Gallery of Art, the recently restored Peacock Room is widely held to be the most important nineteenth-century interior in an American museum" (Yale University Press, 2004). This particular room was actually initially intended to show off the Leylands "extensive collection of Chinese porcelain" (Yale University Press, 2004). It is a room that stood in the midst of controversy during its time due to the nature of much of the porcelain. It brought out the negative attitudes of the British towards the Chinese and it was a room that also reflected changes in art styles, being heralded as the room that may well have started the Art Nouveau trend. Love and Yearning Love and Yearning is essentially an exhibit that involves Persian art. The Smithsonian Institute (2004) tells us that, "This exhibition features twenty-six of the finest illustrated manuscripts relating to Persian lyrical poetry highlighting the union of word and image.....These works demonstrate how 15th to 17th-century artists transformed the rich imagery of mystical concepts found in Persian lyrical poetry into stylized, meticulously detailed and colorful images."
