E-BOOKS AND THE NEW TECHNOLOGY Foremost among the childrens interest in e-books is that they offer a new and exciting way to use computers. Learning to read and enhance their reading skills through e-book technology via computers in the classroom has become one of the most sought-after new technologies among elementary school teachers today. Children dont have to carry books back and forth to school, they can access them online, and they can even use the computer to answer questions about what they have read. Teachers find it much easier as well since their work can be done online with the students as they all learn reading skills. According to Victor McCrary, acting chief of the high performance systems and services division within the information technology laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland, "theres just this coolness factor," McCrary says. "At the K-5 level, it will make learning to read a lot of fun, and at the high school level, students will find some difficult subjects more accessible and interesting." (Kendler 2000, S20).
