an appropriate and acceptable method of physical restraint. This is because few research studies have addressed this topic. Therefore, the following literature review seeks to provide an overall perspective of
the key factors regarding the use of physical restraint systems, as well as the ramifications of use for both the patient and the practitioner. Current use The rationale behind
the current use of physical restraints is predicated for the most part on the concept that these devices are necessary to prevent falls and the associated traumatic injuries (Landi, et
al, 2001). Additionally, physical restraint is used to improve body alignment with elderly patients, who suffer from insufficient body control, as well as in controlling the violent patient. Studies have
shown that "falls, severe functional decline, pressure ulcers and psychologic and physiologic changes" increase in a corresponding manner to the incidence of falls (Landi, et al, 2001, p. 254).
Literature Review Wright (1999) cites the work of Hopton in offering a list of conditions when physical restraints are considered justifiable. These are 1. To minimize the harm done to
