Interactive multimedia might even eliminate the need for learners to ever attend a physical class and certainly, this is already true. Many people today are earning their college degrees exclusively via the Internet. Is interactive multimedia as effective as some would have us believe? Some researchers think so. Hick outlined the many benefits of using interactive multimedia, some of which are presented here: * Improves Learning. Hick stated there are numerous studies and meta-analyses that have shown "interactive multimedia learning takes less time, is enjoyed more and increases learning" (Hick, 1997). He cites Najjars study that concluded "learning was higher when information was presented via computer-based multimedia systems than traditional classroom lectures" (Hick, 1997). * Practical. Interactive multimedia is practical in that it can present true-to-life situations, which helps learners learn (Hick, 1997). As Hick said: "Decision tree simulation, video simulations or simple animations allow learners to learn-by-viewing, learn-by-doing" (Hick, 1997). These are all very practical for the student. * Timely. This kind of learning is very timely. For instance, a worker can review computer programs that are interactive when faced with new situations (Hick, 1997). * Consistent. All learners are exposed to the very same principles unlike a classroom where the instructor/teacher does not necessarily present the same exact information from lecture to lecture (Hick, 1997). * Interactive. The fact that the media is interactive is a benefit in and of itself because it allows the learner to interact with the learning system and the materials.
