Essay / Research Paper Abstract

A 4 page paper discussing many of the differences in the US Airways of 2000 and that of the regional leader that emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2003. US Airways’ new regional strategy enables it to focus on sound, solid operations that can lead to growth in the more definite terms of solid business practice rather than merger and acquisition. The current plan that CEO David Siegel has set forth for the company looks much more like a Southwest of a decade ago than just another foundering airline that US Airways was in 2000. Management has used the difficulties at US Airways to restructure the business, build morale for the long term and enable a focus on superlative performance that naturally will lead to opportunities for growth and expansion. US Airways has emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as smaller but leaner, and having gained the respect of virtually all of the airline industry, ranging from workers to industry analysts. The Industry Environment The effect of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 was to place the final nail in the airline industrys coffin. Southwest Airlines since has completed its 30th consecutive year of profitable operations, but it is the only US airline that can claim that distinction. All others were struggling before the terrorist attacks that grounded US airlines; the attacks merely pushed the industry over the brink in one quick action. The alternative likely would have been the decline and near-demise of one major airline at a time without the influence of 9/11. "Grow and expand" has been the airline industry mantra for ...
