there are always elements that speak of spiritual beliefs, culture, myths and other things that possess deep meaning for the people who created the piece of art. The following paper
analyzes a piece from the Bronze/Iron age in Asia. The piece is a vessel that is shaped like an ax and is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in
New York City. Tribal Art: Ceremonial Vessel from Asia The particular piece under examination is a piece that is apparently not a common item as "only one similar
example has been found, in Makassar in southwest Sulawesi" (Metropolitan Museum of Art). As such it serves as a very unique piece that likely holds a great deal of meaning,
symbolically and otherwise. The dating of the piece, 500 B.C.-A.D. 300, also seems to indicate that it is very much a tribal piece of importance, although it is only through
speculation that one can see any indication of its use and function (Metropolitan Museum of Art). The Metropolitan Museum of Art states that
"A remnant of a tang at the base and two interior struts just below the opening make it likely that the ax-head was suspended or stabilized by means of ropes."
There is a belief that it may well have been hung up and used much like drums that have been found in the region (Metropolitan Museum of Art). However, because
of its ancient and fragile state that theory cannot be adequately tested (Metropolitan Museum of Art). There have been other objects that
