year can have a significant impact on the operation of the eco-system. When tourist activities are frequent and there is no time for the eco-system to replenish itself, the impacts can be negative, both for the eco-system and for the tourist industry that operates there. In addition, disruptions to eco-systems (as seen in attempts to implement eco-tourism in the Galapagos Islands, where endangered turtles lay their eggs) can be irreversible. Once damage is done and wildlife retreats, it is often impossible to return to the tourist destination to its original state. As a result, the ability of the ecosystem to absorb the tourist activity is perhaps the most significant influence on the physical environment. The density and duration of a tourist visit is perhaps the second most significant issue, and it corresponds directly with the impacts on the eco-system and the potential physical damage that can occur with large tourist groups. The duration of stay can impact the level of influence exerted by the group over the environment. In correlation, the types of activities undertaken by visitors can also influence the impacts on the physical environment (I would rate this #3). Ecotourism participants, for example, may be very aware of their impacts and take great measures to protect physical structures, while a large group of "sightseers" might be less aware of the level of impact they are having on their physical environment. Finally, the extent, form and location of tourism developments also play a significant role in determining the impacts on the physical environment, but in a limited manner. When Disney World was created as a tourist destination, for example, they created a large, self-contained resort and multiple theme parks that had a substantial impact on the physical environment. ...
