In Greece the position is very different, this is a country with a strong tourism policy. The reason behind this may be due to the way tourism is the largest industry in the county, making up 15% of the countries GDP and bring in roughly US $8 billion a year in foreign exchange (CIA, 2005). It is also the largest industry in terms of number of staff employed in the industry (CIA, 2005). Currently 800,000 are employed directly in this industry (Xinhua News Agency, 2005) The current government, the New Democracy Party, has made is clear that tourism policy is at the centre of their economic policies and the way in which they which to push forward the economy as a whole due to the direct and indirect benefits that tourism brings (Green, 2005, Europe Intelligence Wire, 2005). One of the first tasks that was undertaken by the government was to re-establish the Tourism Ministry. With Costas Karamanlis at its head as the Tourism Minister, the Ministry of Tourism has the task of developing tourism policy as well as fostering, developing and maintaining international relations in terms of tourism (Green, 2005, Europe Intelligence Wire, 2005). It is also this office that is responsible for any bilateral agreements in this industry between Reece and other counties (Green, 2005, Europe Intelligence Wire, 2005). The running of the tourism industry on a more practical level is delegated. The Greek National Tourist Organisation (GNTO) is under the control of the Ministry of Tourism and is responsible for the marketing of Greece to potential and existing investors.
