If we start by looking at tobacco use in New Zealand there are some interesting trends. There is a smokers rate in 1999 for those over age 15 of 26%, in terms of gender this females show a 22% incidence and males a 26% incidence. However, for the age group 15 - 24 there are higher proportions of smokers, 30% of females and 27% of males (WHO, 2000). However we can also look at smoking by way of ethnicity and also education level. In terms of ethnicity the highest smoking group are the Maori, with 42% rate, 30% of which smoke daily, and 12% smoke occasionally and a further 29% are ex smokers (ASH, 1999). The second most popular group of smokers are those of European descent, with an overall total of 22%, 16% smoking everyday and a further 6% smoking occasionally, 28% were ex smokers (ASH, 1999). The patterns here are clear, young females 15 - 24 are more likely to smoke. More worryingly the Maori population are almost twice as likely to smoke as the European population, the second most prolific smokers on the Islands.
