It is a story that provides the reader with a seemingly simple environment, an environment that is sweet as it relates to childhood, as well as a story about the most dark aspects of humanity. Among all these perspectives and themes we find the theme of education as a very powerful element in Harper Lees tale. In the following paper we examine the theme of education and its importance within the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." Education One particular author, or critic, notes that "Three major themes run through To Kill a Mockingbird: education, bravery, and prejudice. We learn how important education is to Atticus and his children in the first chapter when Jem announces to Dill that Scout has known how to read since she was a baby" (NovelGuide). With this simple introduction into the field of education, combined with the growing knowledge of the ignorance or uneducated conditions of those that surround this family, we begin to see how Scout and her family stand as powers of one kind or another in a society that would perhaps be lost without such educated people. We note that "Atticus reads to the children from newspapers and magazines as if they are adults who can understand issues at his level. By the time Scout attends her first day of school she is highly literate, far surpassing the other children in the classroom and frustrating her teacher whose task it is to teach her students according to a predetermined plan" (NovelGuide).
