What are we to make of a play that brings on its heroine with this stage direction: "Enter the Empress sons [DEMETRIUS and CHIRON] with LAVINIA, her hands cut off, and her tongue cut out, and ravishd" (Shakespeare 1034). Its as if Shakespeare is piling atrocity on top of atrocity to see if he can make it work. Apparently he did, for the play was popular during his lifetime (Kermode 1019). Its excesses of blood and gore have taken more modern audiences aback, though a movie version ("Titus") was made in 1999, starring Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange. The film was not successful, and this can probably be attributed more to the subject matter than to the fact that its Shakespeare, since movies of Shakespeares plays often do well. Kenneth Branagh in particular has made some deliriously funny adaptations. "Titus" is a difficult play to stage, to interpret and to evaluate, to put it mildly. This paper considers what Darwin would say about the extreme acts of revenge among the Romans, Goths and Aaron; and whether or not we can call these acts "survival of the fittest" or if they should be considered "natural selection." Revenge Plots The play abounds in revenge plots: Tamora wants revenge against Titus for having sacrificed her son Alarbus; Aaron urges Demetrius and Chiron to attack and rape Lavinia; at least part of his motivation is that Lavinia has been claimed by Bassianus, brother to Saterninus, the Emperor, whom they hate because their mother has been forced to marry him.
