Tibetan Buddhism is one of the more interesting aspects of Tibetan culture. Also referred to as Lamaism, Tibetan Buddhism traveled to Tibet from India in the second century AD. Buddhism did not become the state religion of Tibet, however, until five centuries later. This move usurped Bon, the previous state religion, but it did not eradicate it by any means. The blending of Bon and Buddhism, in fact, ultimately produced what we now recognize as Tibetan Buddhism. The purpose of this paper is to explore this unique religion and the teachings of the Buddha. The thesis can be presented that: Buddhism stands distinct from other world religions in several key concepts. These distinctions include 1. the concept of karma 2. the concept of nirvana and 3. the concept of Buddhism being a people-oriented religion rather than a God-oriented religion. Each of these concepts will be discussed thoroughly in the paper that follows. Lopez instructs that Tibetan Buddhism evolved as a distinct variation of Mahayana Buddhism. Its basic elements are practically identical to this form of Buddhism, in fact. Buddhism is in many ways one of the most complex of the worlds religions. It like all of the worlds religions, has numerous definite beliefs regarding mans relationship to the powers of the universe.
