Each of these authors also reacted according to where and-most importantly-when, that is-the time in history-that their births brought them into American society. In this way, their personal visions of the racial problems facing African-Americans differed to some extent. Their commonalities, to borrow the words of Lorraine Hansberry, can best be summed up with the phrase that they were all at one time "young, gifted and black." Each, in their own way, confronted the injustices of society with their art and their talent, and used these factors to combat societys ills and to provide a place for themselves within that society. Gordon Parks In this autobiography, A Choice of Weapons, Gordon Parks shows how an incredibly talented, young black man could achieve success in the mainstream white culture before the Civil Rights movement and against all odds. Parks was born in 1912 in Fort Scott, Kansas. His parents, Sarah and Andrew Jackson Parks, were devout Methodists and dirt-poor. He was their youngest and the last of fifteen children. In his book, Parks relates how difficult it was to provide for so many children, but stresses that his parents gave their children a legacy of values, as they were taught to value honor, education, equality, and the importance of telling the truth. Parks childhood instilled in him a fierce determination to succeed. After his mothers death, Parks moved in with his sister who was living in St. Paul, Minnesota, when he was around 16 years old. Her husband threw him out after an argument on an icy December day, and Parks found himself on his own.
