He is an associate professor at the University of Washington, who specializes in American literature and American studies (U. of Washington dg.htm). Nevertheless, there is little doubt, after reading his biography of Henry David Thoreau, Prophet in the Marketplace, that Fink wont soon be regarded as having obtained the degree of stature in Thoreau scholarship that is necessary to be included in such publications. This is because his book takes a perspective on Thoreaus writing career that has never been explored before. As a matter of fact, Fink managed to impress Walter Harding, who gave him an extremely favorable review. Harding, who has the title of "Distinguished Professor Emeritus" at the State University of New York at Geneseo, was the founding secretary of the Thoreau Society and served as secretary for the society from 1941-1991 (Ferrara; Schmidt 164). Additionally, he served as editor-in-chief of "The Writings of Henry D. Thoreau" from 1965 through 1972 (Ferrara; Schmidt). Additionally other scholars, such as Stephen Railton, have also expressed their enthusiastic approval of Finks scholarship (3). Harding is the author of numerous books about Thoreau. By comparing Hardings book, Days of Henry Thoreau: A Biography with Finks work, it becomes clear as to how Finks scholarship provides new territory to be explored. While Hardings and Finks books are very different, they can also be seen as being complementary as Finks scholarship adds dimension to the picture of Thoreau, as a person, that Harding portrays in his book. The main thrust of Hardings book is to explore Thoreau as a man, an ordinary person--since Harding has given his opinion concerning Thoreaus work and writing in previous books.
