In order to consider whether personality is something which is fixed and immutable, or whether it is something which can be changed and altered by extraneous factors over the course of time, it would be useful to consider the definition of personality and the way in which it relates to behavioural patterns and the individuals interaction with society. Some theorists are of the opinion that personality is something which originates from a genetic basis, and that personality traits, like physical appearance, are something which are basically hereditary and static, although the events which impinge upon an individuals life may effect minor variations especially in terms of behaviour patterns. Others maintain that personality is something which develops, in the main, over the course of time and is heavily influenced by the way in which the individual interacts which those factors which affect them in the course of their life.
