Hobbess The Leviathan and Lockes The Second Treatise of Civil Government. Contemporary examples are used to illustrate some of the points. No additional sources cited. SA143phl.rtf The theories of Hobbes and Locke are applicable to society today, just as they were at the time when they were written. While each author has written on a multitude of topics, some themes are important in discussing politics and how society is ordered. For example, the idea of legitimate authority-and when the government has the right to step in-is something relevant when interpreting various political ideologies. Hobbess ideas seem to suggest that most anyone can claim rightful authority as there is a belief in God, in the esoteric, and one can under Hobbess ideas, claim legitimate authority rather easily. There are few proofs. Locke, on the other hand, takes a strong position and suggests that the people must be guaranteed freedoms. Under Locke, legitimate authority is what is right and fair and just, and not simply authoritarian rule to save man from himself. Hobbess view appears unrealistic and antiquated. He would support most any regime. But how would Hobbes be accepted in todays world? Would he fit in at all? These and other questions loom large. Still, each in their own way contributed to political theory at the time that they wrote. To some extent, Hobbess theory is regressive while Lockes theory is progressive. That is a simplification, but the matter may be discussed in more depth. In speaking in conjunction with todays terminology and situations, one might say that Locke might be wearing a tee shirt with the expression "Question Authority" whereas Hobbes would be advocating ...
