The early Spanish, Cuban and Latin American authors each had a distinct style and each fostered the growth of literature in the world. CHRISTOBAL COLON Although best known in the history books as the man who discovered the Americas Christopher Columbus (Christobal Colon) also contributed to historical documents by his extensive writing and through the journals which he kept while on his explorations. Columbus wrote almost exclusively in Spanish. He also used Spanish when with Portuguese phonetic when writing personal notes to himself, when writing to his brother, to Italian friends and to the Bank of Genoa (Wikipedia Contributors, 2006 - 1). Because of the language that Colon used in his writings, there has long been a debate over his national origin. On the 15th of February, 1493, Columbus wrote a letter of appreciation to Luis de Santangel thanking him for the opportunity and the financing to pursue his adventures (Letter..., 2006). He also describes the nature of the land and the apparent relationships between men and women (Letter..., 2006). This letter is an example of a historical document based on the observations of Columbus. ALONSO DE ERCILLA Y ZUNIGA Born in Spain in 1533, Ercilla became involved in the court of Spain in 1548 (Wikipedia Contributors, 2006 - 2). Ercilla went on to joing the military force of Spain and ventured to subdue the Araucanians of Chile (Wikipedia Contributors, 2006 - 2).
