speak, worlds of the future, or worlds where mysterious creatures exist. They are very entertaining works and works that address different issues that may be of concern to children. The
following paper examines 6 of her works and then briefly compares them all. The works examined are The Giver, Gathering Blue, The Messenger, Goassamer, Number the Stars, and The Silent
Boy. The Works of Lois Lowry The Giver The first book to be examines is The Giver wherein the society is in
the supposed future and it is an ideal future. It is presented as the perfect society where each family has only two children, a boy and a girl, and where
children, when they reach a certain age, are given their particular task or job in society. When people get too old they are put in a home and then ultimately
killed, or released, when they serve no purpose any longer. The same seems to go for infants who are born with a problem.
The main character, a boy named Jonah, finds that he will be the Receiver of Memory which is a very important job. But, he is really unaware of what
these memories will be. He learns that the memories are of a different time, when people loved and laughed and suffered, something that does not happen any longer in his
society. He realizes that his society is not perfect and he essentially sets off on his own, something not done, and in the end he finds his own way and
