understand that although there may be similarities in many aspects of the stories, the fact remains that each is still its own unique creation. As such, they should be considered in the context of its own creative reality and authenticity rather than dismissing one or the other in terms of whether or not it is derivative. However, it is important to understand that the framework in which a particular story is presented is nearly as important as the story itself. As Shakespeares most notable creative contributor, Greenes work presented the bard with the material for some of his own work. For example, Greenes pastoral romance "Pandosto" (1588) is clearly the source of "The Winters Tale." But Shakespeares adaptation was also significantly different from the original inspiration, especially because of and through the character of Paulina. "Pandosto" According to Newcomb: "No work could be more appropriate than Greenes Pandosto for an analysis of the early seventeenth-century production of antifictional and antipopular cultural judgments" (753). The fact that Shakespeare used "Pandosto" as the basis for "The Winters Tale" demonstrates that he was not above following the popular Elizabethan practice of turning fiction into drama. However, it should also be argued that Shakespeare had the ability to turn something that would be described today as "mass market" or "pulp" fiction into a story that has been able to endure the centuries as a work of significant dramatic worth. It is important to understand that "Pandosto" is also called the "The Triumph of Time." Time plays an essential role in the story, just as it will in "The Winters Tale" since it is only the passage of time that will allow for the truth to come out.
