The Voice of America has been in many cases the one voice from the outside world that those oppressed by totalitarian regimes have had since its initial airing in 1942 (Voice of America, 2006). Franklin Delano Roosevelt was serving his third term (an accomplishment unprecedented since 1790) as U.S. President and people the world over were eager to hear the voice of America. Interestingly, prior to its advent the United States had been the only world power that did not have its own international radio service (Voice of America, 2006). By the beginning of the Cold War years, however, that situation came to an abrupt end and those behind the Iron Curtain and elsewhere finally had access to news that was not controlled by their oppressive governments. The Voice of America was initiated while the U.S. was embroiled in World War II. Spanning a six year period between September 1, 1939 (the date of Germanys invasion of Poland) and September 2, 1945 (the date of the Japanese surrender), World War II probably resulted in more long-term and far-reaching socio-political and socio-cultural consequences than any other war in history (Sulzberger, 1966). Amidst the destruction and horror of World War II, lives were lost and forever changed. Not only soldiers, but also civilians were affected by this great war. No final number can be placed on the numbers of lives lost but it is estimated that 17 million military personnel were killed and even a greater number of civilians were lost to starvation, disease and other war-related causes.
