While he did not win the game, a university offered his daughter a full scholarship, something that brought tears to his eyes and likely to many others in the studio and around America too. Why should that be? After all, the gift was merely the opportunity for one of his children to go to college and it was not as if he was receiving a sports car or a trip to Hawaii. Why was everyone so excited about a tuition free education? The reason is simple. The cost of higher education has skyrocketed, so much so that many young Americans are unable to attend any college at all. This issue is critical to American higher education as the twenty-first century unfolds. Unfortunately ,the current state of affairs presents a dismal picture for the future. It is no coincidence that presidential candidates have, for the most part, attended ivy league schools. Where one goes counts, but whether or not one is able to go anywhere at all certainly is a major problem. Legal issues also play a role. For example, in July of 2000, the proposed deregulation of Texas state universities had caused a stir. What happened was that a University of Texas Board of Regents committee sought to deregulate state-set minimum and maximum tuition and fee schedules (Badgley, 2000). The concern is that the legislation could make the price of attending a state university in Texas prohibitive for some (2000). On the Texas issue, Representative Henry Cuellar complained that if the proposal passes, less students from lower-income backgrounds would be able to attend (2000).
