They are utilized to transport parts form one area of an assembly plant to another. They are used in the electronics industry in assembling electronic circuits and small intricate devices like watches. One of the most fascinating uses of robots is in medicine. Robots have been created which do everything from as monotonous as medicine dosing to complex surgical procedures such as knee and hip surgery, or even brain surgery. Robots are programmed to perform tasks in a specific pattern according to data that is retrieved through its various sensors. The instructions or programming are stored in what is referred to as the robots control center, its computer brain. These instructions are what allow the robot to successfully complete each assigned tasks. Any errors in the programming results in errors in task completion. The tasks which are performed can be varied either through reprogramming or by the incorporation of instructions in the programming that under certain conditions the robot is to perform differently. These conditions would be evaluated through the robots sensors which would send that information to the computer brain which would react by sending out an appropriate series of instructions. Robots can be either stationary or mobile. Contrary to the images we are left with from science fiction, they are not often designed to look like humans. Those that are most often are less effective in performing useful work and are used instead for entertainment purposes (Cone). ...
