There is little doubt that the personnel manager or todays more extended role of HRM manager has the role to help attain the corporate goals. If we look to the past the only rile was to hire and fire as well as discipline. Providing and to a limited degree controlling the workforce was seen as sufficient. May was assumed to be motivated by the money and as such needed little more consideration. However the human relations school of thought with the work of the theorists as Mayo, Maslow, Herzberg and McGregor all indicated that there was more to the employment relationship. They argued that by using motivation techniques based on the model of social man a higher level of productivity could be gained from the employees, leading to a higher profit level (Scullion and Linehan, 2005). If the employees are to be managed then we can also it is common sense for aspects such as planning organising and leading as part of this role. The extent of these addition roles may be seen as aiding the strategic goals of the organisation by creating synergy but may also be seen as un-necessary and the approach taken today will often reflect the way that employers and senior management believe employees should be treated.
