majority of the agricultural product was able to be exported. The second and equally profound effect the Atlantic slave trade had was a dispersal of the African populations among the Western world. "The dispersal of African populations brought about by the Atlantic slave trade was probably the greatest involuntary migration in human history. Between the early sixteenth century and the late nineteenth century, roughly 12 million West Africans were transported in chains- -and often under the most unspeakable conditions--across the Atlantic to labor as slaves on the plantations established by European colonists in the New World. Between 10 and 20 percent of them died on the high seas before reaching the Americas. The 10 million or so who survived have approximately 100 million descendants, concentrated mostly in the United States, Brazil and the West Indies" (Frederickson PG). The effect in Great Britain was almost entirely economical. The system of slavery did not gain popularity within the British economy and so the African population, slave and free, was minimal until after the end of Imperialist rule. In colonial America the earliest form of labor had been the use of the free and indentured white colonial migrants. It wasnt until the early seventeen hundreds that the slave population was sufficient enough to make an economic impact, and hen it was centered primarily on the plantations of the South, although not restricted to that area by no means. The strength of the American colonies was, by far, the result of the wholehearted use of slavery for labor in the cultivation of tobacco and sugar. African slavery had been in popular in the colonies of the Caribbean and spread to the Americas in the late 16th and early 17th centuries ...
