This sort of story may well play into Freuds notorious Oedipal Complex. The following paper presents Lawrences story and Freuds Oedipal Complex, discussing their relationship. Lawrence and Freud In discussing the things that the story and Freuds theory have in common it is perhaps best to first discuss Freuds theory. It is based on the ancient tale of Oedipus, a man who was foretold, by prophecy, that he would kill his father and marry his mother. He left his parents so that he would not fulfill this prophecy, but he was unaware of the fact that who he thought to be his parents were really a couple who adopted him. In the end he does fulfill the prophecy without even knowing it was his father he killed and his mother he married. In Freuds theory a young boy desires his mother in many ways. The "complex" "theorizes the universal (unconscious) desire of every young boy to sleep with his mother and eliminate his father as a rival, who the boy fears will castrate him and who has lawful access to the mother" (Oedipal trajectory/Oedipal complex, 2004). As the boy develops he begins to realize his difference from his mother, realizes she does not have a penis, and thus begins to respect the father, who has a penis and thus possesses authority (Oedipal trajectory/Oedipal complex, 2004). He represses his desire and identifies with his father and then grows into a man who finds a woman whom he can have relations with, a sort of "lawful" equivalent of his mother (Oedipal trajectory/Oedipal complex, 2004).
