This is something that is truly innovative as just a few decades ago, the concept of a car phone was thought to be out of reach. Yet, when the cotton gin was invented, there had been many changes as a result. At the same time, these changes may have made life easier in some way, but the change also had an impact on government, society, the economy and the beliefs of the people. How might an invention as simple as the cotton gin have had such an effect? First, some historical information is in order. The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1819 (Jackson, 2000). Another source has Whitney inventing the machine in 1793 (Yanak & Cornelison, 1993). There is some question in regard to the exact date due to the fact that the idea would come and several years would pass before the invention was created, patented and so forth. In any event, the cotton gin came about late in the eighteenth or early nineteenth century. It had the unique ability to separate seeds from the cotton fiber (Yanak & Cornelison, 1993). It made life easier. Prior to the invention, one person might spend an entire day picking the seeds out of a pound of cotton (Yanak & Cornelison, 1993). The cotton yield would be about four and a half pounds daily, but with the gin, that number would be more like 70 pounds (Hayes, 2008). Later improvements to the invention would see a leap from 70 pounds per day to 400 pounds per hour (Hayes, 2008, p.36).
