(2002). A nanometer is one billionth of a meter or something equivalent to about 3 or 4 atoms wide (2002). In utilizing the well understood chemical properties of both atoms and molecules, nanotechnology suggests that the construction of molecular devices has amplified properties (2002). It is important to manipulate atoms one at a time and place them precisely where they are needed in order to produce the desired structure (2002). Nanotechnology is not a reality yet. However, a student writing on this subject will want to point out that the ability to perform the tasks described above, is almost here ("What," 2002). When speaking of nanotechnology, most look ahead to the future, but the past history of nanotechnology is rather interesting. The concept of nanostructures is quite old, and almost as ancient as integrated circuits which originated with a 1959 lecture by physicist Richard Feynman (Rhea, 2000). It is there that he came up with the possibility of fabricating devices on an atomic or molecular level and he called these things nanostructures(2000). That is what started it all and created an exciting new way to look at technology. One can imagine that if such technology were to become a reality, that things would change immensely. What might result from nano technology are things such as self-assembling consumer products, computers which are much faster, and novel inventions that are not feasible with the current state of technology ("What," 2002). Space travel that is both safe and affordable is another aspect of nano technologys potential (2002). Many wealthy people who have been around the world would like to go into space, but that is not possible today. With the use of nano technology, ordinary individuals might be able to fly into outer space and perhaps even lead ...
