If we look to the eighteenth century and Gainsborough there is an artist who is perhaps best known for his landscapes, but also painted many portraits, many of which were in his Bath period, which began in 1759, where studios in Bath attracted a series of well known subjects and continued after he move to London in 1774 (known as his London period). Looking at his portrait style the times and attitudes of the age are reflected and give an indication of some of the contemporary perspectives on gender. In retrospect starting in the nineteenth century Gainsborough is also seen as a predecessor of the styles of naturalism and impressionism, such as by the art critic Roger Fry (1866-1934) (Tscherny, 2003). Gainsboroughs portrait style is reminiscent of Anthony Van Dyck. By looking a some of his work, choosing four portraits, the style and the perception can be analysed. The four portraits chosen are Mrs. Sarah Siddons 1785, Mr and Mrs Andrews 1749, The Morning Walk (Mr and Mrs William Hallett) 1785, and the Countess of Howe 1764. Mrs Sarah Siddons Mrs Sarah Siddons was a well known personality of the age, perhaps the most famous actress. This presence of character is represented in the form painted by Gainsborough where there is a strong profile in rich colours that indicates a high level of confidence both of the actress and also f the artist. There are rich deep reds wit the background and the mouth, hair that has been heavily powdered, and detail which shows a silk ribbon that trims her dress in which a more classical style of chiaroscuro has been utilised.
