course, all people are people first and gender only matters a bit. However, not everyone agrees. Women have for too long felt as if they have been treading water, ruled by males, and not given a voice to express their deepest feelings. In fact, many issues address genders individually and specifically like abortion, marital rights, employment rights and laws regarding sexual issues. What is at the crux of many of these things is the fact that women have been oppressed and some of these issues concern only them. It is for these reasons that women tend to band together and take issue with the law and protest the fact that their voices are all too often muffled. In light of that thought, a statement provided by a student for evaluation is as follows : "Women today share a singular and defining political perspective as women. They perceive that gender-based discrimination takes place regularly for themselves and other group members, express anger over it, and are committed to political action to forward the interests of women. Gender is the primary way they orient themselves to politics." This seems true according to the observation just made. Yes, women are the ones who have to struggle to make ends meet after a husband has abandoned the family, and it rarely the other way around. It is often the case that the women are given the children in divorce situations--though this is slowly changing--and it is because of this, and many other things, that women do band together and act politically. Women have taken on the burden of childrearing and this changes the way in which they relate in society. Men often just have to look out for themselves.
