Treatments in this area for PTSD and other mental health problems for example are still somewhat new, but evidence that such interventions are effective is beginning to surface (Kilpatrick et al, 1997). In terms of PSTD or even OCD, there are behavioral methods that can help patients deal with something that cannot be rationalized nor treated easily. When a patient dwells on certain thoughts that are irrational or seemingly cemented in the patients mind and difficult to pry open, ordinary psychotherapeutic methods may fail. Often, patients are unresponsive and sometimes medication is recommended for such conditions, but many therapists view that as a last resort. At least counseling must be used in conjunction with medication so it is important that clients are treated appropriately. Behavioral alternatives are preferable to many other treatments and offer options to counselors who are puzzled by particular cases. Even in the usual course of treatment, a patient who presents with free floating anxiety can benefit from behavioral techniques to stop smoking, lose weight or even to stop worrying. Structured cognitive behavioral treatments, including Stress Inoculation Training (SIT), prolonged exposure,and cognitive processing therapy, show great promise(1997). In fact, at the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center, Falsetti and Resnick were in the process of developing a promising new treatment which incorporates parts of Barlows cognitive behavioral therapy for panic and Resick and Schnickes Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) along with elements of SIT (1997). Techniques have also been developed and piloted for women with comorbid violence-related PTSD and substance dependence (1997).
