Essay / Research Paper Abstract

The question of life existing beyond the confines of our own planet and the visitations that such beings might make to our world, is one that pre-dates the twentieth century. In this 10 page research paper, the writer explores the mystery of U.F.O.s, historical "sightings," government reports, and the ensuing controversy today. Statistics concerning the number of people who claim to have seen a UFO are cited and alternative explanations are provided. to our world is one that pre-dates the twentieth century. It is a controversial question, and one whose strongest arguments are generally those proving that such entities do not truly exist. But I do not believe that such assertions can be wholly accepted. After all, just as no one has ever proven the existence of extraterrestrials or their spacecrafts, no one has ever successfully proven that they do not exist either. Therefore, I intend to demonstrate that the exploration of this subject should certainly not cease; since eccentric sightings can not be disproven- they must for the time being, be accepted. According to my research, the date of the earliest UFO sighting in history is unknown and the evidence for such sightings is slim and often argued to be purely speculative (Jacobs, 1975). Evidently, researchers just generally describe the beginning of the "UFO phenomenon" as the sighting of some odd "mystery ships" over the United States in 1896-97. The next significant group of reports came during World War II, from both Allied and Axis pilots. The pilots reported seeing strange metal-like objects, which they called "foo fighters," in controlled flight ...
