a Jew. He is often ridiculed in the story, for the sake of comedy, though there are also elements that offer him up as a clear victim of the Christian society. One of the most prominent scenes in the play that involves Shylock and his position is in Act IV Scene I. In this scene we have Shylock presenting his case before the courts. The following paper examines this particular scene and examines how Shylock could have helped argue his case if he knew something of the Gospel of Luke. Shylock and the Gospel of Luke In Shakespeares story one of the primary elements is that which involves Shylocks payment of a pound of flesh. It is his rightful duty to be given a pound of flesh for the money owed him. But, the comedic content of this particular topic, and the ending of the play, involves a woman dressed as a man stating that Shylock cannot get a pound of flesh without harming the individual who owes him money. This is a twist and allows the one who owes Shylock to go completely free, while Shylock does not get his due. This is the most basic illustration of the situation and it is a situation wherein Shylock loses. He loses, however, perhaps because he was unable to truly and adequately argue his case, and because he was a Jew, something clearly looked down upon by the Christians in the story. But, if Shylock had knowledge of the Gospel of Luke he may have had the ability to argue his case better. One of the most prominent teachings in the Gospel of Luke comes to us in Luke 16.
