Civil War, there is not necessarily a great deal of focus on many of the unique soldiers and situations that this time in history brought about in relationship to the African American people. In other words, it appears that most of the information presented on African Americans in the Civil War is perhaps more novel and sparse. That is one of the reasons why the work The Louisiana Native Guards by James G. Hollandsworth is of great note. It is a work that examines one small, but incredibly important, group of African American men in the history of the Civil War. The following paper examines, and reviews, this work. The Louisiana Native Guards by James G. Hollandsworth In relationship to why Hollandsworth wrote this book, especially considering he is not necessarily a historian in the traditional sense, it appears as though this particular topic of American history has only briefly been touched upon in other works. Interestingly enough, this seems to perhaps be the case in light of the fact that most Civil War works utilize the journals and letters of the soldiers in order to tell their story and with the African American people not many of them were literate. As such there is not a great deal written on the African American experience and the story of the Louisiana Native Guards is one that falls to the wayside because the lack of written personal experiences. In truth it would clearly seem as though the information available, the primary sources, were likely all white and thus were likely not unbiased.
