Even today, nearly three hundred years later, the theories he put forward are still accepted and form the basis of most economics courses today (Anonymous, 2002) We do not know the exact date of Adam Smiths birth, but he was born in 1723 in Scotland, and was baptised on June the fifth in Fife. Adam Smith studied at Glasgow University, and his genius was evident from an early age. He graduated from this University and when he was only seventeen years of age (Anonymous, 2002). After this Smith went to lecture as a fellow at Oxford University. After this he was to return to Scotland, but this time initially to Edinburgh. He was also to return to Glasgow later. During this time it may be surprising to realise that he was not lecturing in economics, and was not to write and publish the seminal work, Wealth of Nations, (full name; An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations), until ten years after he left the Glasgow University Chair of Moral Philosophy (Anonymous, 2002). He was granted this chair in 1752, after having joined the university in 1751 as a professor of logic. The lectures he gave covered subjects such as ethics and jurisprudence as well as the political economy. Theory of Moral Sentiments was published in 1759, a work that considered social morals. After he left Glasgow he decided it was time to travel, and on these travels he met many important thinkers of the time, these cannot fail to have aided in his formulation of economic theories.
