Much of what shapes Pi is religious faith, which Pi makes even more personal than most are able to do. Yann Martel Yann Martel is the quintessential "late bloomer." Though he studied philosophy in school, once he had his university degree he variously worked as a dishwasher, a security guard and a landscaper, specializing in planting trees. It was not until after having gained that life and work experience that he began to write. Martel currently lives in Canada, which he also made to be Pis final destination. Martel is not native to Canada, however, but was born in 1963 in Spain. Before arriving in Canada, he lived at various times in Costa Rica, France and Mexico. He was awarded the "Quality Paperback Book Clubs annual New Voices Award" for Life of Pi in 2002 (The Life of Pi Wins 2002 New Voices Award, 2003). Pis Growth James, brother of Jesus, writes in his epistle that "he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind ... he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does" (James 1:6b, 8, NIV). Pi has such a heart for God that he seeks to know more about Him and is not afraid to look for God in more than one direction. A native Indian, Pi is Hindu as is most of the population of India.
