He only really worked in this realm for a decade or two, but it seems as if his work received critical acclaim almost overnight. His folk art hangs in museums today and Pippin has been applauded for his unique take on life. His life in fact was less than extraordinary, and he lived rather simply, but he always had the heart of an artist. Horace Pippin was born to black laborers in 1888 in West Chester, Pennsylvania ("Pippin," 2001). His family moved to Goshen, New York, and after attending grammar school there, he was forced to go to work (2001). He held a variety of odd jobs, but when the United States entered the First World War in 1917, Pippin was 29 years old (2001). He decided to enlist in in the New York National Guard, but wound up overseas with the 369th Infantry (2001). In 1918, he would become seriously wounded on the right shoulder and received an honorable discharge and a purple heart later on (2001). He was considered to be unfit for work, according to army doctors (2001). He could not work because of his arm, and it also affected his ability to paint. In 1920, Pippin would marry Ora Giles of South Carolina and they settled in the town in which he was born in the state of Pennsylvania ("Pippin," 2001). The couple lived on the disability pension and what she earned (2001). Although little mention is made of art up until this point in Pippins biography, he had an interest all his years but often did not find the time due to his work (2001).
