The author says this because there were many parts of the working class who were excluded from the labor movement. For example, women, black people and Native Americans were not a large part of the movement; rather, those in the early labor movement were white males as were the capitalists (2001). At the same time, while the demographics were quite similar in respect to labor and owners, there were of course differences between the capitalists and the protesters. After all, on one hand there were people who were being paid a wage, and on the other, there were employers. However, the leaders of the labor movement did share at least some common beliefs with the employers. At the same time, this occurs only to an extent, as at some point they part ways. They are not on the same side. Just as labor is today, the labor movement then was political. Rosemont (2001) writes about the employers political parties and that the movement would be aligned with other parties. In 1829, what was deemed the New York Workingmens Party would get about six thousand votes (2001, 16). The author goes on to talk about Jacksons Democratic party and the problems it has had. For instance, many policies associated with "Old Hickorys regime" were denounced (2001). Part of the problem with the mainstream involved a variety of issues. It is noted that a few problematic ones were for example the fact that slavery was seen as natural and a genocidal war against the natives was something that was approved (2001).
